At AltRider we are always on the lookout for solutions to the problems we face as adventure riders. KTM's design objective with the 1190 model is to keep the trellis frame narrow to replicate the feel and control of a dirt bike. This is a great design and overall a necessity, but one of the consequences of having this narrow frame with a large engine is the rear brake lever now has to travel outward from the center of the bike to position the brake tip where the foot can properly engage. The problem with this design is now the rear portion of the lever is easily activated by the boot, causing a premature or inconsistent braking action or affect. This is why we have created the AltRider Brake Lever Shield for the KTM 1190 Super Adventure.
Positioned between the foot peg and the engine casing, the rear brake lever is angled almost perpendicular to the bike before curving down and along the clutch case cover. Since the lower body is so much stronger than the upper, seasoned aggressive riders hang on to the bike with their feet and legs to reduce fatigue of the upper body and arms. With the position of the rear brake on the 1190, the rider’s foot can unintentionally contact and begin to engage at the top of the lever where it begins to bend towards the engine casing. This was noticed by a lot of both our seasoned and beginner level customers when riding in the standing position. The AltRider Brake Lever Shield mounts to the perimeter of the casing using OEM installation points. An outward flange prevents accidental engagement of the break arm while still providing a surface to properly hug the bike with your foot, all without interrupting any feel or ergonomics.
The Brake Lever Shield is made of 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) aluminum and is available in black, silver, and orange
